Why 304L at 12 mm

The L grade keeps carbon at a low level, so the heat-affected zone of a welded joint retains its corrosion resistance without a post-weld solution anneal in most service conditions. At 12 mm the plate carries enough stiffness for tank shells, baffles and support plates while still being workable with plasma or waterjet cutting, and it can be rolled and formed with standard plate-bending equipment.

Typical applications

This size is commonly specified for chemical and petrochemical storage tanks, process vessel shells and bottoms, water and wastewater treatment equipment, heat exchanger components, and welded frames in food and beverage plants. The dull No.1 face is also chosen where plates will be insulated, coated or clad, since a decorative finish would add cost without adding service life.
